Chevrolet Captiva FullThrottle.in 22-Sep.-2008

Things are happening fast and quick in the Indian SUV segment with the Chevrolet Captiva daring to challenge the might of the darling of the segment, the Honda CR-V. Notching up a market share of 24% in the month of August 2008, the Captiva's good run has not only taken a toll on CR-V's sales numbers, it has also made a dent in the butch off-roader, Ford Endeavour's sales portfolio. The Captiva although not as refined and polished as the CR-V, still has certain advantages over the latter.

Although a soft-roader, Captiva's looks are a good compromise between the car-like looks of the CR-V and square-jawed look of the Ford Endeavour. It is a good mix of butch and sporty looks, owing to the large radiator grille with the famous Chevy bowtie, the flared wheel arches, high waistline and sloping roof. The Captiva on the whole makes for an attractive looking SUV thanks to its well-proportioned design.

The interior like the exterior is quite nicely executed - plush, cozy and comfortable. The two tone dash with the faux wood insert running across, along with the well-laid out instrument cluster lends the interior a smart appearance.

The Captiva apart from sporting basic amenities such as power steering, power windows, air-conditioning and leather upholstery also features an in-dash 2DIN 6-CD changer, height adjustable multi-functional steering wheel, height adjustable driver seat, climate control, a dynamic and unique Automatic Level Ride Control, a digital information display as well as safety features like dual front SRS airbags, ABS and EBD.

The Captiva offers ample space to seat 7 adults thanks to its width, which is more than both the CR-V and the Grand Vitara.

Currently available only in the 2x4 LT variant, it employs a 150PS, in-line 4-cylinder common rail direct injection diesel engine to get around. A decently fast car with a maximum speed of 169kmph the Cpativa is capable of running the 0-100 in just 11.6 seconds and really gets in its element between 1750-3500rpm. However performance under 1500 rpm feels a bit sluggish as the car fails to respond energetically to pedal inputs.

When taking into account fuel efficiency, the Captiva is the best in its segment, returning 15.9kmpl on the highway and 11.9kmpl in the city. The fat 235/60 R17 tyres on the Captiva offer good grip and encourage spirited driving despite the handling being poorer than that of the CR-V. Despite the big wheel size, the Captiva also scores high in the ride quality department.

Priced at Rs. 17,73,999 (ex-showroom Delhi), the Captiva not only undercuts the CR-V, but also comes across as the more spacious and economical option. Its no surprise why it is doing so well!
